Use the Editor toolbar to add data to the CNR Student Database: Target layer: cnr_students.dbf Method: Right-Click the cnr_students layer Selection option: Open Method: Open the Tools Dropdown Menu Selection option: Editor Toolbar Method: Click the Down Arrow in the Editor Dropdown Menu Selection option: Start Editing Method: Double click the Student Attribute field located in the Wyoming record. Use the Joins and Relates feature to join the CNR Student Database to the Map of the 48 Contiguous United States: Method: Join attributes from a table Target layer: states2.shp Method: Choose the field that the join will be based on Selection option: STATE_NAME Method: Choose the table to join this layer Selector layer: cnr_students Method: Choose the field in the table to base the join on Selection option: STATE_NAME Method: Click the OK icon. Result: The CNR Student Database (cnr_students.dbf) is joined to the Map of the 48 Contiguous United States (states2.shp). Use the Layer Properties dialog to display the number of CNR Students across the 48 Contiguous United States in 5 categories using a Orange-Blue Color Ramp (Use White as the color for the states that have no students enrolled in the program): Target layer: states2.shp Selection option: Symbology Tab Selection option: Quantities-->Graduated colors Method: Right Click Color Ramp Selection option: Properties Method: Left-Click 1st Algorithmic Color Ramp Selection option: Color 1 = White Color 2 = Orange Algorithm = CIE Lab Click the OK icon button. Use the Statistics dialog to determine the number of CNR Students and the Mean amount of CNR Students per state: Target layer: cnr_students.dbf Method: Right-click the STUDENTS field. Selection option: Statistics Result #1: The total number of CNR Students enrolled at NCSU is 120. Result #2: The mean number of CNR students per state is 2.5. Use the export feature in the File Drop-down menu to make a JPEG image that displays the Geographic Distribution of NCSU CNR Students. Method: Export Map Target file: assign5.jpg Selection option: JPEG (*.jpg) Result: A file is created as assign5.jpg which displays the Geographic Distribution of NCSU CNR Students.
